Known to the ancient world as Taprobane. Colonists from northern
India subdued the indigenous Veddahs in about 543 BC. Their
descendants, the Buddhist Sinhalese still form most of the
population. Hindu descendants of the Tamil immigrants from
southern India still account for one-fifth of the population.
The island was occupied by the Portuguese in 1505 and by the
Dutch in 1658. In 1796 the British seized the island and in
1948, it became an independent member of the Commonwealth as
Ceylon. On May 22, 1972 Ceylon became the independent Republic
of Sri Lanka. Tensions between the Sinhalese and the Tamil
separatists has often caused violence. In 1987 hundreds died in
an attack by Tamil rebels. Sri Lankan forces responded by
attacking the rebel held Jaffna peninsula. India has become
involved in the fighting. @
